HomeGlossaryMarket concentration

Market concentration

How much production or revenue is controlled by a few firms—typically measured with concentration ratios or the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index in antitrust work.

High concentration can reflect scale efficiencies or barriers to entry. It alarms policymakers when it coincides with higher prices, lower quality, or weak innovation.

The content plan’s state_industries roadmap pairs corporate concentration and industrial policy with globalization and deregulation; this entry tracks measurable seller concentration.

Geography

National concentration statistics can miss local monopolies in hospitals or broadband—where state and metro data become especially relevant.
